For three days, downtown becomes a stage for the unexpected.

From August 7 to 9, Sparks Street and World Exchange Plaza come alive with the Ottawa International Busker Festival, bringing 20+ performers, jaw-dropping acts and free, family-friendly entertainment to the heart of the city. From acrobatics and comedy to juggling, magic and fire, there is no telling exactly what you will stumble across (and that's half the fun!)

Whether you are planning a full day downtown or stopping by for a show, here is how to make the most of an unexpected Buskerfest weekend.

Start Downtown

There's no rush to head straight to the festival. Start your day with a coffee, a cold drink or breakfast at one of downtown’s cafés before heading out to explore.

With Parliament Hill, the Rideau Canal, the National War Memorial and some of Ottawa’s most iconic architecture all within walking distance, Buskerfest is the perfect excuse to spend a little more time exploring the core.

Take the scenic route. Browse the shops. Find some public art. And keep your eyes open. You never know when the unexpected might show up.

Follow the Action

This is where the unexpected takes over.

Sparks Street and World Exchange Plaza will be filled with performances all weekend long, with 20+ performers from Ottawa and around the world bringing everything from magic and juggling to aerials, comedy, acrobatics, fire and more to the streets of downtown.

There is plenty to plan around, but leave some room to wander. Alongside the scheduled performances, you may come across roaming acts and unexpected moments happening throughout the festival.

One thing is guaranteed: you never quite know what you are going to see next.

Pick a stage, find a spot and settle in, or keep moving and see what catches your attention. There is no wrong way to experience Buskerfest.

Try Your Hand at Circus School

Have you ever wanted to run away and join the circus?

Here is your chance to test the waters.

Circus School is a free drop-in experience running each day from noon to 4 p.m. on Sparks Street between Elgin and Metcalfe. Try your hand at circus skills like juggling, plate spinning and hula hooping, and see what you can learn with a little practice.

Whether you are bringing the kids or simply want to discover your hidden talent, it is a fun way to become part of the action instead of just watching from the sidelines.

Grab a Bite Between Acts

Three days of stunts, juggling and chasing down the next show can work up an appetite.

Luckily, you don't have to go far. Downtown Ottawa is packed with cafés, restaurants, patios and quick bites, making it easy to turn a few hours at Buskerfest into a full day downtown.

Grab lunch before the afternoon shows, stop for a cold drink when you need a break, or settle onto a patio and refuel while keeping an eye on the action around you.

Keep the Night Going

On Friday night, Buskers & Burlesque brings comedy, circus, juggling and burlesque together for a ticketed 19+ show at the Marriott Hotel Ballroom at 9 p.m. It's a different way to experience some of the festival talent after dark.

Looking for somewhere to keep the night going before or after a show? Metcalfe Plaza is another downtown spot to add to your plans. With evening programming, DJs and a lively atmosphere, it is an easy place to grab a drink, meet up with friends and keep the energy going.

Saturday night brings another kind of spectacle. The Les Grands Feux fireworks competition lights up the sky on August 8, creating the perfect way to cap off a day of Buskerfest. Find a spot along Sparks Street or head toward Parliament for a great view as the fireworks take over the night sky.

End the Weekend With a Grand Finale

All good things must come to an end. Buskerfest just prefers to go out with a bang.

On Sunday, the festival wraps up with the Grand Finale at World Exchange Plaza, bringing performers together for one final show featuring highlights from across the weekend.

It is the perfect way to cap off three days of unexpected moments, incredible talent and street-level entertainment.

A Few Tips Before You Go

Come curious. The schedule is helpful, but some of the best moments happen when you simply follow the crowd.

Bring water and sunscreen. You will probably be spending more time outside than you planned.

Keep some cash handy. Buskers pass the hat after their shows, and tips are an important part of how performers make their living.

Take your time. You do not need to see everything in one visit. Come for a show, stay for the atmosphere and let the day unfold.

Make a day of it. With restaurants, patios, cafés, shops, landmarks, fireworks and plenty happening throughout downtown, there is no reason Buskerfest has to be your only stop.
