Ottawa 200: Celebrate 200 Years Downtown

On September 26th, Ottawa marks 200 years since the founding of Bytown in 1826. What began as a small logging community along the Ottawa River has grown into the capital city we know today, shaped by generations of people, businesses, artists, communities and visitors.

Throughout 2026, Ottawa has been celebrating this milestone under the theme Celebrate Together, with festivals, performances, community events, art and special experiences happening across the region. On the 26th, those celebrations come together for a full day and night of programming, with downtown at the heart of much of the action.

From live music and public art to history, food, late night performances and unexpected discoveries, there’s plenty to experience. Whether you have a full day to explore or are stopping by for one event, here’s what’s happening downtown for Ottawa 200.

Start Your Day at Bytown Museum

September 26 | 9 AM to 5:30 PM | Bytown Museum, 1 Canal Lane

Start your celebrations by getting to know the story behind the city.

The Bytown Museum will host Bytown Together, a full day of free programming featuring performances, interactive experiences, activities and opportunities to connect with Ottawa’s stories and community. Located along the Rideau Canal, it’s a fitting place to begin a day celebrating 200 years of the city’s history.

After taking in the programming and exploring the museum, head further into downtown for even more Ottawa 200 celebrations.

Celebrate Together at the Ottawa 200 Block Party

September 26 | 10 AM to 10 PM | Ottawa City Hall, Marion Dewar Plaza

From the morning through the evening, Marion Dewar Plaza will be buzzing with the Ottawa 200 Block Party.

For 12 hours, Ottawa City Hall will be filled with live music, food, art, history and activities celebrating two centuries since the city was founded as Bytown in 1826. Whether you spend a few hours here or make it one of your main stops for the day, there will be plenty to see, hear and experience.

From City Hall, it’s easy to continue exploring downtown and make the most of everything happening nearby.

Take a Stroll Along Sparks Street

Canadiana Block | Sparks Street, between Kent and Lyon Streets

Make your way to Sparks Street to experience Canadiana Block, a vibrant collection celebrating Canada’s provinces and territories right in the heart of downtown.

Take a stroll through the installation, discover the stories and details that bring each part of the country to life, and then take some time to explore Sparks Street itself. Pop into a local shop, stop for a coffee, grab a bite or find somewhere to sit and take in the atmosphere.

With Ottawa 200 celebrations happening throughout the city, there’s no need to rush from one event to the next. Leave yourself some time to wander and discover a few downtown favourites along the way.

Find the Music Downtown

Once you’ve explored Sparks Street, there are plenty of ways to keep the day going with live music, drinks and time to settle in.

Live from the Booth will bring live music to Sparks Street, adding another reason to stick around and enjoy the downtown atmosphere. It’s the kind of stop you can build into your day while exploring the area, grabbing a bite or meeting up with friends.

It’s also the final weekend of the season at Metcalfe Plaza, giving you one more chance to spend some time in the space before the season wraps up. Stop by, enjoy a drink or bite and take in the energy of downtown as the afternoon moves into evening.

With plenty happening throughout the day, you can take your time, find a spot you like and enjoy the celebration at your own pace.

Keep the Music Going at Soundscape

September 26 | Plaza Bridge | FREE

As the afternoon turns into evening, head beneath Ottawa’s historic Plaza Bridge for the closing night of Soundscape.

Bringing together music, art and creativity in a unique setting, Soundscape offers another way to experience downtown as the celebrations continue. The September 26 shows will be free, making it an easy stop to add to your evening plans.

And once the sun goes down, there’s even more to discover.

See Ottawa in a Different Light at Nuit Blanche

September 26 | 7 PM to 7 AM | ByWard Market, Confederation Park and downtown

When night falls, Ottawa takes on a completely different character.

For one night only, Nuit Blanche Ottawa transforms the capital into a vibrant nighttime experience of art, light and discovery. From the ByWard Market and Confederation Park to downtown streets and iconic landmarks, explore the city through a new lens as artists and creative projects bring familiar spaces to life.

With programming running from 7 PM until 7 AM, Nuit Blanche is the perfect excuse to keep exploring long after the sun goes down.

Stay Up Late at Pique

September 26 | 4 PM to 4 AM | Arts Court, 2 Daly Avenue | FREE

For those looking to keep the night going, Arts Court will be home to Pique, presented in partnership with Nuit Blanche and Ottawa 200.

Celebrating its 21st edition, Pique brings diverse artistic communities together to explore, experiment and connect through adventurous music, immersive art and unexpected discoveries. For the first time, the event will be completely free to the public, making this year’s edition an especially exciting addition to the Ottawa 200 celebrations.

With programming running until 4 AM, it’s one more reason to stay downtown and see where the night takes you.

Make Downtown Part of Your Celebration

With programming starting as early as 9 AM and continuing into the early hours of September 27, there’s plenty of opportunity to make a full day and night of Ottawa 200.

And while you’re moving between events, make some time for the places that make downtown what it is. Grab a coffee before the day gets started, browse the shops along Sparks Street, stop for lunch, meet friends for dinner or discover a new café, restaurant, museum or activity.

You don’t have to plan every minute. Leave some room to wander, explore and make a few discoveries of your own.

Plan Your Ottawa 200 Day

The Ottawa Tourism Visitor Centre will have extended hours and special activations on September 26 from 9 AM to 8 PM at 54 Elgin Street, offering another helpful stop for residents and visitors looking for information about what’s happening across the city.

Getting around will also be easy all weekend, with free transit on buses, O-Train Lines 1, 2 and 4, and Para Transpo. Residents and visitors can ride free to many of the major Ottawa 200 events taking place across the city.
